Cricut Design Space "Image load failure"

Image
It sometimes happen that when opening an svg file, Cricut Design Space shows the error message Image load failure . Many people complain about this issue - sometimes even the files, that previously worked properly, suddenly don't load into the DS. Reddit thread about this error   It's very frustrating, because it's hard to find the reason. If you have a plotter template that doesn't work, you can try the following procedure. Install Inkscape - it's a free graphic software for creating and editing svg files, download available here . Open your svg file. Most plotter templates consist of many various shapes. In my example there are three simple ones: a square, a circle and a star. Now we want to split the project into single parts. Choose one shape, then select File > Export : Now you see a new window with Export options. Choose Selection button and from the dropdown menu Inkscape SVG (*.svg) . Select also the location of your file and give it a name (it must cont

General tips for cutting faux leather + layered bracelet free pattern

Image
Faux leather is a great material for cutting with a plotter. It does not fray and comes in many colours, textures and patterns. It can be used to make cases, wallets, earrings, bracelets and many other fancy things. To cut fau x leather successfully (and avoid frustration, and save your precious mats…) , follow these tips: Use the strong adhesive mat. Place the leather on the mat with the right side down - it adheres much better. In addition, there is often some fluff on the left side that remains on the mat and cannot be removed. Avoid cutting multiple parts from a large sheet. It is better to cut them individually from smaller pieces. Additionally, fix the edges of the material to the mat with masking tape. Faux leathers varies in thickness. Always do a few tests before cutting out the final pattern. Avoid very small elements in your pattern (like tiny holes in lace patterns) - they may not come out well.   If want to glue faux leather, test the glue you plan

Paper basket with ribbon

Image
The basket for patient crafters - threading the ribbon through the paper parts is laborious, but the effect is worth of it. And besides - we don't buy expensive cutting plotters to make simple boxes :-)     Tools & materials: - cutting plotter supporting A4 or A3 format (I have Silhouette Cameo 4) - A4 or A3 cardboard, ca. 170-200 gsm ( in A3 version the basket body is cut from one paper sheet, in A 4 version it consists of two pieces). - glue - ribbon, 12 mm width, 70-80 cm length Cut files available at LottaIn Etsy Shop .  1.   Cut the body and the bottom. The red line in the design is the fold, not the cut. I've used the "Score" option in my Cameo 4, and it's a good idea to test settings first. The default force for coverstock was 20 and the first try was a failure - the triangle tabs  were practically cut out. The value of 1 was really enough! You can also remove that line and fold paper manually.  2. Glue the ends together. The first and the last p

DecoTime Aquamarkers - color chart

Image
I'm learning to draw and I love trying various techniques. Recently I discovered DecoTime Aquamarkers (from Action shop). I've made the colour chart as ods and pdf (A4 paper), and I think it's a good idea to share them with others :-) colour chart - Libre Office file colour chart - pdf file The list contains the colours from all the sets I've found at my Action shop (one set of 50 pc, 6 sets of 10 pc and 6 sets of 3 pc). My first drawings look like this (The leaves don't look good... I'm still fighting to draw their texture correctly...)

Simple insulated lunch box

Image
A very simple cooler bag - just a box shape. Machine sewing of the insulating foam... well, it wasn't a great experience.  The seams are rather a disaster. If you have a thick, stiff foam, I really recommend the method from this post - more time consuming, but the seams look much better and there is no risk of tearing the foam.

"radioactive" t-shirt (free pattern)

Image
My daughter isn't a princess type. She hates dresses, ruffles - loves computers and robots. Even a little bit older adventure books she finds "archaic", because there's no modern technique in them. So, I wasn't surprised with her next t-shirt design...
